A mystery buyer has set a new record by purchasing a penthouse overlooking Central Park in New York for a fraction more than $100million (£66 million). The property is on the top two floors of one of Manhattan’s most prestigious new towers, the 75-storey One57.

The penthouse offers floor-to-ceiling views across the park on one side and to the Empire State Building and comes with six bedrooms, seven bathrooms and two powder rooms.

The price surpasses the $88 million paid for a property for billionaire’s daughter Ekaterina Rybolovlev in 2012 and is actually cheaper on a cost-per-square-foot basis ($9,000 compared to the $13,000 for the Rybolovlev property).

This record price is not expected to last long in New York’s booming super-prime market, with at least half-a-dozen luxury skyscrapers under construction.

Ben Benalloul, of real estate firm RLTY NYC, told The New York Daily News: “I think this is a record weメre going to see broken several times over the next two years.”
